Without a doubt, the kitchen is the heart of the house. This is the room where food magic happens - that magic that brings the family together to spend time and enjoy the great smells and tastes that are created. It is the one room everyone who visits you gravitates to - for a cup of coffee or tea, a glass of wine, some nibbles and just the socialization that is available while meals are being prepared. Being able to enjoy this space where you spend so much of your life is of paramount importance, and when you are considering what that room is going to look like and how it's going to function, you want a designer who can take your vision and execute flawlessly.

Clean, modern lines along with bits of luxury make a kitchen that is functional as well as beautiful. Quality features like imported tiles for the backsplash, the latest techniques for gorgeous and practical countertops, cabinets that look great on the outside while they work hard to organize you on the inside, and unique materials and lighting options for your central island mean that you will end up with a kitchen that you can enjoy every time you step over the threshold. Cooking meals with quality appliances makes everything easier, and there's nothing quite like being able to pick your bottle of wine from your convenient, under-counter wine cooler without stepping out of the room.

Just like the kitchen, your bathroom is another room you spend a lot of time in as you get ready to meet the day or unwind after the day is done. It is another room that you want to be perfectly appointed so you can be efficient when necessary and relax when you have the time to do so. Features like floating commodes, deep stand-alone tubs made from quality materials, beautiful tiled floors that don't require encapsulated shower configurations, counter and sink combinations that evoke sophistication as well as efficient performance - these are some of the elements that make for an excellent bathroom you can wake up in or start your dream time before bed. Designs that allow for open showers open the space and provide for easy cleaning including a configuration that uses a custom-made tile "rug" holding both your luxurious tub as well as an open-access shower with a generous rainfall shower head create a space you might never want to leave.

Julian Graham Kitchens & Bathrooms is a design center that caters to all of the concepts and more. Magnetic Power Generator - Free Energy for Life

Magnetic Power Generator - Free Energy for Life
I understand you may be skeptical of such a thing, and that it is too good to be true, but this is a reality. So how could you utilise the energy from a magnet? A magnet is something that has energy, yet doesn't require energy input. When you try to connect the same polls of a magnet together, you'll feel the force repelling them. This is natural and does not need an energy input to instigate this. Therefore, a magnetic energy generator takes advantage of these properties.

Did you know that you could completely eliminate your power bill, by constructing a zero point magnetic power generator?

A Zero point magnetic power generator is basically a Free Energy Generator. It uses magnets, and magnetic force to induce perpetual motion. It runs by itself indefinitely without stopping, thus creating completely free electrical energy, which can fully power your home for free. A perpetual motion device refers to a machine that runs perpetually i.e. indefinitely, and produces a larger amount of energy than it consumes. Thus, it produces free energy indefinitely and runs by itself without having to need a third-party device or resource to power it.

The free energy devices have been suppressed by the corporate world because such devices would allow people to create their own energy for free, which would ultimately shut down the big energy corporations.

What are the Benefits

By constructing a magnetic power generator, you will be able to generate completely free electric energy, i.e. creating energy without needing any source of renewable or non-renewable energy. The generator powers itself and creates energy by itself without requiring solar energy, heat, water, coal or any kind of resource. This generator powers itself and works indefinitely without stopping, creating a large amount of energy. Here are some of the benefits that Magniwork has:

* It works in every home and requires only a small amount of space
* You can eliminate your power bill by 50% or even completely, depending on how you implement the magniwork generator
* It works in all conditions and can work in extreme hot or cold without any problem
* The material needed to build the magniwork generator is cheap and easily accessible anywhere in the world
* The process has been simplified and the steps are easy to follow, so even a complete novice would be able to follow them.

Can this device be used to power a household?

The magniwork free energy generator can be efficiently used to power your home with almost zero costs on your side. Furthermore, the generator is eco-friendly and doesn't produce any harmful byproducts.

Hundreds of successful magniwork generators have been built around the world, which proves that this technology really works. It is predicted that the technology will rapidly spread, and some industry-insiders even predict that the magniwork free energy generators will be the energy in the future. These experts estimate, that by 2020 energy companies will start implementing this technology in order to create cheaper and more environment friendly energy. Until that time comes, you can use this technology at a very reasonable set-up cost.

Is It Safe?

This free energy generator is safe to use and operate. It doesn't produce any harmful byproducts or gases, and there isn't any hazard concerning the generator itself. Even if you have young children, they may freely walk in the close viccinity of the generator.

It is also a very eco-friendly solution because it doesn't pollute the environment. The generator itself isn't flameaballe or combustile, so it's completely safe.

How Much Can You Save?

The amount you can save by building the magniwork free energy generator can vary. If you decide to build the generator as a supplement to your current electrical installation, i.e. partially power your household with magniwork, you can easily save anywhere in the range of 30-50%. This means that your power bill will reduce by 30-50%.

If you decide to implement this on a full-scale, it will independently power your household meaning that you won't have to pay anything to the power company. The magnetic free energy generator will work by itself perpetually and generate 100% free electric energy.

This could be the holy grail for people looking to save on their energy bill. More information about reducing your energy bill by up to 50% is available here.

Make the Most of Your Eat-In Kitchen With a Cozy Banquette

Make the Most of Your Eat-In Kitchen With a Cozy Banquette
I learned what a "banquette" was at about 6 years old. (Although I wasn't aware of the term at the time.) It was at my childhood friend Bobby's house on Waverley Street - right there in his kitchen, sat two built-in upholstered benches, with a shiny white table in between - just like the ones you see at the diner. It was small, cozy, and the most unique thing I'd ever seen. I loved it!

I loved it so much I installed one in my own home - many years later. I love nestling in on the weekends with my morning coffee, lingering over great dinner conversations at my friend's home - and I love designing them for my clients.

No two banquettes are the same. Each one has a personality of its own - fitting seamlessly in to the most unexpected spaces - never failing to provide a tremendous sense of style and comfort. It's where families gather to share their events of the day and where we feel enveloped with a sense of warmth and protection at night. Best of all a banquette is suitable for any style of kitchen.

These banquettes typically require less space for traffic flow, provide great additional storage solutions and ultimately seats more than conventional table and chairs.

Take a look around your kitchen and neighboring spaces and see how you could make the most of your kitchen dining area with a space saving banquette. Maybe you have an old butlers pantry, awkward corner, inefficient laundry area or window alcove that's a perfect fit. Bay windows are an ideal spot for banquette dining, and could potentially seat 6 - 8 people comfortably.

7 Tips To Consider When Designing And Building A Banquette.

1. Function.

Know how you want this dining area to function for you. Will it be used for homework, computer time, reading, lounging or for meals only? Design it accordingly.

2. Comfort.

For a more comfortable seat consider a cushion of 4-5" thick, and be aware of the firmness of that seat. It will compress and ultimately change the height slightly. With a cushion this thick, your base seat should be 14-15" high (finished from the floor). It may seem low, but once the luxurious cushions are installed the proportion will be perfect. Lastly, angle the back slightly to allow for maximum comfort.

3. Size.

If you're opting for a more contemporary look without any seat cushions at all, then the finished height of the seat base should be 18" high (from the floor) and have a seat depth of a minimum of 18" (for your tush). When upholstering the seat and back, provide a good 24" overall for depth of seat which will allow for the thickness of the upholstered back. Measure a favorite chair at home to help you determine the finished height and depth you like.

4. Shape.

Banquettes can be designed in all shapes and sizes and ultimately depends on how much space you're working with. L-shaped, Ushaped, curved or straight, your banquette will become a focal point in your kitchen.

5. Space.

Each person will occupy approx. 24-30" of space to comfortably eat while using a fork and knife. That said consider 24 square feet will seat 4 people.

6. Practicality.

Upholstering the banquette seats and backs in a faux leather, vinyl, or outdoor fabric will make it much easier to maintain and is also much simpler to slide in and out of. Loose cushions become more problematic and are less comfy - and it's all about the comfort factor!

7. Storage.

I prefer large storage drawers beneath the seat rather than hinged lids. It's much easier to operate and access. Making things even easier have an operable drawer pull out from the side of the banquette base if possible.

MAN-WOMAN NEXUS IN THE POETRY OF KAMALA DAS

MAN-WOMAN NEXUS IN THE POETRY OF KAMALA DAS
India is a unity in diversity and its literature also gives the same fragrance. Modern Indian English poetry emerged at the end of the Second World War after the end of colonialism. It is one of the many new literatures which began at that time. It is also a fact that modern Indian poetry in English has been neglected by the most of the critics, foreign readers and intellectuals as compare to the creative writings of Africa and the Caribbean. The reason is that it has no obvious and direct relationship to the cultural movements which led to national independence. But by 1947, the situation had changed and with it the concern of the new poets became their relationship to and alienation from the realities of their society. They got a hard challenge from older nationalist writers and from regionalists who demanded a renaissance of the culture of pre-colonial languages of India.

Now English is no longer the language of colonial rulers. It is a language of modern India in which words and expressions have recognized national significances and references. English is not the language of ordinary people. It is the language of those who govern, communicate, produce and make decisions at the national level. Words, phrases, expressions of modern Indian English poetry show the local realities, Indian traditions and ways of

feelings. Such Indianization is present in the poetry of Kamala Das, Pritish Nandy and more strongly in the works of Keki Daruwala. It is more commonly present in terms of voice and stress in the poetry of Nissim Ezekiel and Jayant Mahapatra.

Indian English poetry is become a part of the process of modernization which includes urbanization, industrialization, independence and social change and resulting the evolution of an English language culture alongside that of Hindi and the regional languages. Despite continuing attacks on the Indian English poets, their place in modern Indian culture is recognized.

The Indian English poets as a group tend to be marginal to traditional Hindi society not only by being alienated by their English language education but also by belonging from such communities as the Parsis, Jews and Christians or being a rebel from Hinduism and Islam or by living in foreign countries. Many poets of Indian English language come from westernized Indian families and several poets were sent to boarding schools in their childhood. They often do not have local roots.

The Indian English poets decision to use English as a language of writing poetry is not only influenced by education but also by the poor

state of regional language poetry. In this regard, Kamala Das herself says that:

When she began writing in English, there was no modern poetry in Malayalam.1 Manohar Shetty also has the same views regarding his regional language poetry or literature. He opines that:

In Tulu (the language of his family) there is no creative literature.

Many Parsi poets writing in English language may be explained by the fact that Parsi-Gujrati is a dialect without a tradition of serious and creative literature.

Many of the poets have been particularly active in translating from regional languages. Ramanujan is famous for his translations from classical and medieval Tamil and modern Kannada, Jayant Mahapatra from Oriya, Kolatkar from Marathi, Patel from Gujarati, Mehrotra from Hindi and Nandis translations Bengali are known to every one who is familiar with Indian English poetry.

Kamala Das is the most distinctive and unique voice in Indian English poetry in particular and the whole Indian literary scene in general. She brings a most noticeable and directly perceptible feminine sensibility and an explicit, undisguised, natural idiom in her poems. Recognized as one of the foremost poets of India, Kamala Das was born on March 31, 1934 in Malabar in Kerala. By the influence of her great uncle Nalapat Narayan Menon who is a prominent writer, her love poetry began at an early age. Kamala Das remembers watching him work from morning till night and thinking that he had a blissful life. Kamala Das was also greatly affected by the poems of her mother, Nalapat Balamani Amma, and the sacred writings kept by the matriarchal community of Nayars. She was married to K. Madhava Das at the tender age of fifteen. She herself says in her interview that she was mature enough to be a mother only when my third child was born. Her husband often played a fatherly role for both Das and her sons2. There is a big age difference between kamala Das and her husband.

When Kamala Das wished to begin writing, her husband supported her decision only because of his want of improving the income of the family. However, she could not enjoy the morning till night schedule like her great uncle. She would wait till night to write. In an interview, she accepts:

there was only the kitchen table where I would cut vegetables, and after all the plates and things were cleared, I would sit there and start typing.3

At the age of 65, in 1999, she converted Hindu to Islam and became Kamala Das to Suraiya. She had the view that only Islam could provide a woman love and protection.

Kamala Das began to write at the tender age of six and after that she gave a number of remarkable and memorable works. She has the great writing skill both in poetry and prose. She has the perfect hand both in prose and verse. She wrote effectively in both the languages i.e. in English and in Malayalam. She wrote following 10 works in English language : The Sirens Summer in Calcutta The Descendants The Old Playhouse and Other Poems My Story Alphabet of Lust The Anamalai Padmavati the Harlot and Other Stories Only the Soul Knows How to Sing Yaa Allah In Malayalam language, she wrote following 14 works under the pen name of Madhavikutty: Pakshiyude Manam Naricheerukal Parakkumbol Thanuppu Balyakala Smaranakal Varshangalkku Mumbu Palayan Neypayasam Dayarikkurippukal Neermathalam Pootha Kalam Chekkerunna Pakshikal Nasthapetta Neelambari Chandana Marangal Madhavikkuttyude Unmakkadhakal Vandikkalakal

In English language, she published her first work in 1964 titled as The Sirens. After that Summer in Calcutta in 1965, The Descendants in 1967, The Old Playhouse and Other Poems in 1973, My Story in 1976, Alphabet of Lust in 1977, The Anamalai in 1985, Padmavati the Harlot and Other Stories in 1992, Only the Soul Knows How to Sing in 1996 and Yaa Allah in 2001 were published. Among them My Story is an autobiography, Alphabet of Lust is a novel, Padmavati the Harlot and Other Stories is a collection of short stories and the remaining are the collections of poems.

In the language of Malayalam, she wrote Pakshiyude Manam in 1964, Naricheerukal Parakkumbol in 1966, Thanuppu in 1968, Balyakala Smaranakal in 1987, Varshangalkku Mumbu in 1989 and Palayan in 1990.

Kamala Das received many national and international awards for her great literary contribution. Some of them are Asian Poetry Prize, Kent Award for English Writing from Asian Countries, Asan World Prize, Ezhuthachan Award, Sahitya Academy Award, Vayalar Award and Kerala Sahitya Academy Award. She has also held the position of Vice Chair person in Kerala Sahitya Academy.

Kamala Das is a poet of many facets and moods. She is a poet of free love. Love is the lynch-pin round which the poetry of Kamala Das revolves. Her unfilled need for love is the main treatment in her poems. Love is a complex and multi-dimensional human experience in her poetry. It has physical, emotional and spiritual moods in the poetry of kamala Das. Love and hate are often neighbors in her poetry. The theme of alienation is also present in the poems written by her. Because of her disillusionment and alienation from this physical world, she gives the note of protest with feminism in her poetry. Apart from these themes, the theme of glorifying the womanhood is also grabbing our attention. Her poems are mainly concerned with her uncaring husband, her childhood, her marriage, love, life and her intimacy others. Kamala Das delights in celebrating herself in her essential feminine self. Her writing style is economical and the use of language is very precise. Such is her creative genius that even after succumbing to several unwanted controversies, she remains a widely popular literary figure. Kamala Das is not only a poet of Indian English language, but she is an age herself.

There are several types of relationships between a man and a woman is known in this mortal world. These relationships are made by human beings to meet their different types of social, personal and emotional needs. The first and foremost relationship between a and a woman is of mother- son relationship. Man- woman relationships of father-daughter, husband-wife, brother-sister and lover- beloved are other types of man-woman relationships and each and every man-woman relationship has its own social, personal and emotional values and significances. The treatment of man-woman relationship is the main and most important theme of the poems of Kamala Das. Although the treatment of man- woman relationship in her poetry is something subjective, but it is also true for general life of common man common woman. In her poetry, she generally talks about her relationships with her husband and with other men also to whom she treats as her friends or lovers. But the conclusion of all the relations made by her to men including her husband is that love is the necessary element to make a healthy relationship which she fails to get. In her famous poem The Freaks, Kamala Das talks about the disgust relationship of a husband and wife. In this poem she concludes about the base of the husband- wife relationships in the following lines:

But, they only wander, tripping Idly over puddles of Desirecant this man with Nimble finger-tips unleash Nothing more alive than the Skins lazy hungers?4

Here she has the view that only physical relation cannot give a perfect touch to a man-woman i.e. a husband-wife relationship. She asks:

Who can Help us who have lived so long And have failed in love?5

Meaning is that love is necessary to build a healthy and long lasting relationship between anyone. Only physical relationship is not able to bind the two persons.

In her another poem The Sunshine Cat, she also talks about the same kind of loveless relationship of the man and woman. She complains:

the man she loved who loved her not enough

the husband who neither loved nor used her 6

and concludes the fate of this loveless bond of man woman relationship in the following way: a bed made soft with tears and she lay there weeping..7

Hence, in the poetry of Kamala Das, she strongly recommends that the presence of love is necessary to make any kind of healthy and long lasting relationship between man and woman. Whether it is a bond of husband and wife or lover and beloved or it is bond of mother and son, all types of man-woman relationship can be made only by a bond of love.

My Boyfriend Secretly Taped us Having Sex

My Boyfriend Secretly Taped us Having Sex
I began dating Paul in 2006. Id just started working in a new city and was homesick. Then I met this charismatic guy at a friends party and we got on very well. When he asked for my number I didnt hesitate.
We started dating and became very close. Im usually quite cautious when it comes to new relationships but my feelings grew so quickly, before I knew it I was falling in love with him. Very soon we were sleeping together.

After about six months we started fighting a lot. Whenever we argued he would become disrespectful towards me. We only seemed to get along when we were in bed. Our relationship became increasingly rocky but I was still so in love with him that I was willing to stick it out.

Roll Tape

One night after wed had another fight he called to apologize and invited me over. Soon we were having sex. Afterwards when he went to the kitchen, I noticed a little red light blinking from his bookcase. I moved away the books and DVDs and found a video camera that had been recording. I found the replay button and saw, to my horror, that wed been recorded having sex.

I started rifling through his stuff. I dont know what I was expecting to find but I was certain there was more to it. I found three untitled recordable DVDs and left with them in my bag. The minute I got home I played them. They were all sex DVDs, some featuring me and others featuring unknown girls, but always starring him.

Late that night he called, saying he wanted to explain. He realized I found his stash. He said it was his private thing and nobody else had seen them. According to him, it wasnt a big deal since nobody got hurt. I kept it to myself for a couple of days. I knew once I told someone it would be real. I felt so many emotions betrayal, humiliation, anger, sadness. I didnt know how to begin dealing with everything.

I finally confided in my best friend, who suggested I go to the police. But I was so ashamed I couldnt. She insisted he was the one who should be ashamed and that Id done nothing wrong. I knew she was right but I couldnt look past the fact that Id been reduced to a character in a DIY porno flick.

When Paul wanted the DVDs back I told him Id destroyed them. It was true but he didnt believe me. He hounded me for a while until I threatened to go to the police. As an up and coming attorney he evidently didnt want this tainting his reputation, so he disappeared.

I still feel used but with the help of my friends Im trying to put it behind me. I cant tell my family what happened and Im always scared that some sex tape of me will surface on the Internet. I worry about how many people might have seen the footage, how many other girls hes exploited and whether hes still at it.

There were signs that my boyfriend didnt have that much respect for me, or women in general, but I ignored them. I have learnt to be more careful in trusting people next time I get involved with someone.

Need a New Crown What You Should Know

Need a New Crown What You Should Know
Image source: https://image.slidesharecdn.com/thingsyoushouldknowbeforebuildinganewhome-170321070113/95/erik-laine-things-you-should-know-before-building-a-new-home-1-638.jpg?cb=1490079934
If your dentist has said you need a new crown, you might be wondering why this is. What kind of treatment is involved and which type of crown will best suit your needs. These days, there are many different options to think about, depending on the position of the crown in your mouth and your concerns about appearance.

Why Would I Need a Crown?

Firstly, why would your dentist have told you a crown is needed?

Crowns are designed to completely cover up a tooth, protecting the entire tooth right down to the gum line.

Once in place, you will not be able to see any of the original teeth which will be safely underneath your new crown. You may also hear a crown being referred to as a cap, but this is exactly the same thing.

They are used to protect teeth that are badly damaged.

This can happen if you have a tooth that is heavily decayed. It can also happen if you previously had a large filling that is failing, or if a tooth has received root canal therapy. You might also need a crown if your tooth has taken a knock which has chipped away much of its original structure.

Crowns protect and restore teeth where a filling simply wouldnt be strong enough. Once your new crown is in place, you will be able to bite and chew food normally without fear of the tooth crumbling away.

Your crown will be designed in such a way as to tightly fit over the tooth underneath it. This is so that it completely seals the tooth, protecting bacteria from getting inside and causing further infection and decay.
Its a great treatment that will help to prolong the life of your natural tooth.

What Is the Procedure for Having a Crown?

To fit a crown, your dentist will need to carefully prepare the tooth. This is done using a local anesthetic to ensure you cannot feel anything during this treatment.

They will numb the tooth before shaping it. This is essential to make sure the new crown will fit properly and that it wont feel too bulky or look unnatural.

Once the tooth is prepared, your dentist will generally take a detailed impression. It is then sent to a dental laboratory for your new crown to be carefully handmade to the exact prescription sent by your dentist.

After the impression has been taken, your dentist will fit a temporary crown which will protect your tooth while your new crown is being made. Its important to realize that this temporary crown while being perfectly adequate, wont be nearly as good as your permanent crown.

You will need to take care when brushing and flossing so you dont dislodge the crown. Its wise to avoid biting down too hard or eating something very sticky with this crown as it could pull it off the tooth.

At your next appointment, your new crown will be fitted and adjusted by your dentist before being permanently cemented in place. It should look and feel immediately pleasing and natural, completely restoring your tooth.

What Are the Different Types of Crowns That Can Be Used to Protect Teeth?

Crowns can be made from a variety of different materials which include precious metal alloys and extremely durable porcelain. If the tooth is right at the back of the mouth and space is quite tight, its possible your dentist may suggest using a gold crown. This traditional material is hard wearing and is very kind to the opposing teeth. It can be an ideal choice if you happen to clench or grind your teeth.

Another option is to have an alloy substructure which is then covered up with tooth-colored porcelain. This is another popular choice that is cost-effective and hard wearing, and which can be more cosmetically pleasing than a gold crown.

A third option is to have an all ceramic crown which may be made from a pressable ceramic material or from a material called zirconia. These crowns use technologically advanced materials, creating highly aesthetic results.

When crafted by a skilled technician, your new all ceramic crown should look little different from your natural teeth and will blend in extremely well.

Same Day Crowns

This is another possible option that is becoming increasingly common. Some dental practices have invested in CEREC technology. This is where advanced CADCAM technology is used to precision-make your crown while you wait. There are several clear advantages from choosing this option if possible.

Firstly, a same-day crown eliminates the need for a temporary crown as instead, you can receive all the treatment required in one comfortable appointment.

You will leave your dental office with your new crown permanently in place. Secondly, the procedure to make this type of crown is slightly different. There is no need for your dentist to take a conventional dental impression. This can be a huge advantage for anybody with a strong gag reflex or who struggles to remain comfortable during this process.

Instead of taking an impression, your dentist will carefully scan your tooth using a tiny handheld camera. This device collects all the information needed for your new crown which is then sent to a computer.

The next stage is for your dentist to design your crown before the design is sent to the on-site milling machine. This type of crown is made from a solid block of pure pre-shaded porcelain that will be closely matched to the shade of your natural tooth.

It only takes a short while for the machine to precision make the crown, after which it will be hand finished and glazed. It can then be fitted and cemented in place. Its an incredibly effective process that produces extremely high-quality crowns. There is no need to worry that you are somehow getting a lesser product by choosing this option.

When you visit your dentist to have your dental crown, they can discuss all possible options with you. They will probably suggest the choice they feel will be most effective for your needs. The good news is that with proper care and regular maintenance your new crown should last at least 10 years. It can possibly last a lot longer before you need to think about replacing it.

New Home Owners Prepare your Home for Winter

New Home Owners Prepare your Home for Winter
Due to the government's incentive tax credit to encourage more and more first time buyers into the housing market, a great number of owners are looking at spending their first winter in a house where they're responsible for all the maintenance often for the very first time. If you're one of these first time home owners who hasn't yet had the pleasure of preparing your home for the winter weather yet, there are some basic supplies that'll make your winter season a lot more pleasant to deal with when it comes around.

Well before the weather frosts up, it is a good idea to go out and buy your seasonal items that you might need for the winter months; once the cold weather kicks in many of these items sell out quickly once the first snow falls and people scramble to cope with it.

One of the most important wintertime purchases that you will need for your new residence is a good sturdy snow shovel; be sure to buy at least one good snow shovel for your home before it snows. Good snow shovels become very difficult to find once the landscape is covered in that frozen stuff.

Salt or ice-melt is another item that you'll want to stock up on before the weather turns bad as well. Some ice melters have materials in them-like sand-that give you extra traction even if all the ice isn't gone. Buy enough ice melter to last you the whole winter if you can; stores often don't carry enough to last more than a few months into the winter, particularly if the weather is very poor. Store your salt or ice melt in a dry place until you need to open it; a plastic container in a covered area by your door is a handy place to keep some as well. Make sure that you include a plastic scoop to help you distribute the product over any areas that you have shovelled or have gotten slippery.

Sand isn't totally necessary if you're using an ice melt product, but it can come in handy to throw down on areas that are frozen; it can be particularly useful when used for traction for your car.

For the interior of your home, a decent wet/dry vac can be very handy in the wintertime. You can use a wet/dry vac to suck up spills, pools of melted snow, the overflow from your washing machine, or small floods in the basement. This is a great item to have all year round due to its versatility.

The last item is one that many people don't think of as being something useful for the winter, a ladder. However, a ladder can be a lifesaver in the winter for many reasons: hanging holiday lights and removing excess snow or fallen branches from your roof. Make sure you get a good quality ladder for maximum safety.

Don't be afraid to spend a little more to get good quality equipment for your winter supplies; good supplies are much more comfortable to use and will last you for years to come.

Spring is finally here, and with Spring comes a good old Spring clean! The start of the new season is the perfect time to do a thorough clean around your home and garden, and tick off items on that ever-growing to-do list.

Cleaning out the garage and garden shed, giving the mattresses an air out, dusting out the very back corners of cupboards and giving the gutters a good thorough clean should all be on your list of spring cleaning items.

What else should you clean in a spring clean?

Aside from the usual spring clean tasks, its also a good time to think about other uncommon maintenance jobs around the home. For example, loose gate latches, an unsteady letterbox, or perhaps some noises in your roof cavity that needs to be addressed.

If you do have noises in your roof, youve probably experienced some sleepless nights listening to chirping, scratching, scurrying and other unsettling sounds.

The source of these noises is most likely birds, mice, insects or other pests calling your roof cavity home. And although its nice for them to be out of the cold, its not so nice for you and your family to have to tolerate.

As well as being a general disturbance, these unwanted critters have the potential to spread harmful diseases as well as ticks and fleas, and can also damage your home from their chewing and scratching.

These pests will often set up a nest or home with items already in your roof, so you may find your belongings will also experience some degree of damage.

Youll also find your roof covered in excrement, further damaging your belongings and your home. All of these issues can seriously damage the value of your home and put your family at risk.

What to do if you have noises in your roof

Pests nesting in your roof is an annoying issue to have for sure, but one that can be easily solved with the right help.

The quick solution is to call in pest control specialists to remove the immediate issue. However, this will not stop unwanted guests from nesting in your roof long term.

To eliminate these critters for good, you need a solution that will prevent them from returning.

Look for an experienced leader in gutter protection solutions in your local area, and ask about customised gutter plans that the offer. Many of these companies can also provide you with a customised bird proofing and pest proofing solution to eradicate pests from nesting in your roof for good.

This service can be different for all customers, depending on your needs. From bird spikes, to gutter mesh, and blocking all nooks and crannies that the pests have used as entry points into your roof, a professional team will keep your home pest free.

It generally consists of a synchronised, coordinated and systematic procedure to address the issue. This involves a number of steps including:

Firstly, checking to ensure that there are no birds in roof prior to installation.
Assess the options for a complete gutter guard solution, considering your homes size, shape, roof material, location among other things. Install gutter guard ensuring its made from high quality and durable materials.
Specific covering, bird spikes and other measures are added to beams and perching areas.
A screening of the roof gutter is undertaken, to ensure there are no flaws in the protection system.

Addressing these issues is often an element of home improvement that is forgotten until it's too late. So get yourself a personalised gutter guard and pest proofing plan to improve the security and the health of your home.

On Reconditioned or Refurbished Notebooks

On Reconditioned or Refurbished Notebooks
What exactly is a reconditioned or refurbished notebook computer? Depending on where you are buying, it normally should be a used - or possibly a returned notebook - that has been factory rebuilt. A refurbished notebook computer is basically a cheap, used (maybe) and renovated computer that satisfies all your performance and portability needs and provides all the advantages you would get on buying a new notebook - such as warranty and technical support. This is critical - do not buy a so-called reconditioned or refurbished notebook computer if it does not have the same warranty or guarantee as a new machine.

I'm writing this article right now on a factory reconditioned notebook that I purchased well over two years ago at a very substantial savings over the same machine "new". It came with a full factory warranty and it has performed like a champ. Granted, I was nervous when I first bought it, but I'm now convinced that if you can find a reconditioned or refurbished notebook that has the features you're looking for, you'd be foolish to pay full price -- the discounts are incredible, and the products are functionally identical.

If you just need a computer that is portable, one that you can use to perform simple computing tasks, why spend a fortune in buying a new notebook from some well-known brand? Look for a refurbished notebook computer instead. You will get a notebook that will give you the required performance at a much lower price - and it will still be covered by a warranty.

There is normally a difference between "refurbished" and "reconditioned" (or factory reconditioned). Refurbished usually means that this is an older notebook that has been used and then reconditioned - often by a third party. Depending on the warranty being offered by the refurbisher, this could be an excellent deal. As always, it depends on whether the refurbished notebook meets your specifications. If so, and the price - and guarantee - are good, then you have nothing to lose.

Reconditioned machines, when you find them in a retail outlet, usually are returns that had some problem, went back to the manufacturer, were fixed and now are available at a very substantial discount but have the full 'new' machine factory/manufacturer guarantee. This can be a huge savings and an incredible deal. Often these reconditioned notebooks sell at a discount of 50% or more - and they may even be current models.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but my experience with factory reconditioned notebooks has convinced me that it's foolish to dump a bunch of dollars into a new machine if an equally capable refurbished notebook is available. After all, every reconditioned notebook was once a new notebook that had some kind of problem causing its return. If the factory did its job, then the reconditioned notebook is less likely to have a problem than a new model. And if it does have a problem, you will still have the warranty that new notebooks have.

Students, and of course their parents, who are on the look out for a low-priced notebook to meet school needs, should definitely consider buying a refurbished notebook computer. Education is expensive enough without throwing away money by paying top dollar for a notebook when an equivalent refurbished or reconditioned notebook would serve as well. Check out the computer shops in the local area - or even check online sites like Amazon.com that may showcase a good refurbished notebook computer on sale.

So before you spend - possibly waste - a lot of money buying a brand new notebook that might have features you will never need and accessories you never asked for, look into the possibilities of a suitable and low-priced reconditioned or refurbished notebook computer.

Non-heated carpet cleaners that use cold water and low-flow technology to deep-clean carpets leave carpets dry in about 6 hours. On the other hand, heated models that can attain temperatures of up to 210F provide exceptionally powerful cleaning power and deeper mining to instantly melt stubborn dirt on the carpet surface. As with all cleaning applications, cleaning power is enhanced by heat. Thus, heated models are more effectual for more challenging applications.

For heated models, the boiler is another significant feature. It is best to go for carpet cleaning machines with stainless steel boilers rather than aluminium ones. Stainless steel boilers are tougher and more suitable for heavy-duty applications.

The newest models of carpet cleaner are especially noted for their advanced cleaning technologies. The innovative low-moisture, low-flow technology requires less water for cleaning. As a result, it aids in getting carpets cleaner while reducing the drying time from 24 hours to as less as 1 - 6 hours. This reduces any risk of mild growth or water damage.

Carpet cleaners must be used in grouping with carpet shampoos or solutions; they are also referred to as carpet shampooers. For complete and excellent carpet cleaning results, it is recommended that you use green carpet shampoos along with these carpet cleaners. Using these solutions is especially helpful for removing stains on the spot. Being green, these shampoos for carpets are non-toxic, bio-degradable and environment friendly.

Your carpets will continue to brighten up your interiors as long as you take good care of them. If you pamper your carpets with excellent cleaning features of quality carpet cleaners, you will surely be happy with the results.

Personal Hygiene of the Kitchen Steward

Personal Hygiene of the Kitchen Steward
The personal hygiene of the kitchen steward is a very big responsibility that he has to carry. After all, his stewarding job revolves around keeping the whole restaurant and its kitchen clean, so it follows that he also has to maintain personal cleanliness and hygiene as well.

Personal hygiene refers to his overall personal appearance as well as the cleanliness of his body. Here are the things that he has to remember to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.

Cleanliness of the Body

When it comes to the cleanliness of the body, this means taking showers before going to work. If the kitchen steward has problems with sweaty underarms or body odor, then he should make it a point to always wear deodorants before arriving for his shift. This way, he will not have to deal with sweat marks in his uniform or body odor, both of which are a great turn off to people who see or smell it, especially the guests.

Hair and Make-Up

When it comes to hair, the kitchen steward has to make sure that it is always kept neat and clean. For females with long hair, it is recommended that they tie their hair away from their faces or wear it on a bun. For males, their hair should be kept short and neatly combed. After all, seeing a restaurant staff sporting long, shaggy, unkempt, and untidy hair is also a big turn off.

Putting on make-ups is usually not recommended when the kitchen steward is working in the restaurant kitchen; however, if the kitchen steward is going to put make-up on, she has to make sure that the application is very light, not heavy. The kitchen steward also has to refrain from using heavy perfumes.

Hands and Fingernails

Aside from regularly washing the hands, especially if the kitchen steward has just recently visited the toilet, the fingernails should also be kept short and clean. He has to make sure to trim them regularly.

As for female kitchen stewards using nail polishes, the only shades or colors allowable in restaurant kitchens are clear or colorless nail polishes as well as very light pink nail polishes.

Teeth

Of course, it naturally follows that the teeth be kept clean as well. For this reason, the age-old adage brush your teeth every after meal is followed.

Jewelries, Socks, and Stockings

The only allowable jewelries permitted in the restaurant kitchens are wedding rings as well as wristwatches. Earrings, especially dangling earrings, are definitely not allowed while working in the kitchen. Necklaces as well as bracelets are not also allowed. However, if the kitchen steward wants to wear one while at work, he or she should always consult with the management first and make sure that they get the managements permission before wearing extra jewelries.

As for socks and stockings, it is very much recommended that the kitchen steward wear a pair of clean and fresh socks and stockings every day.

Uniforms and Shoes

Restaurants require their kitchen stewards to wear their uniforms while at work, and the uniform has to always be neat as well as clean when they report for their shift. The same can also be said true of their shoes. The kitchen steward has to make sure that his personal appearance meets the standards of the restaurant when it comes to hygiene and cleanliness, and he has to make that he sets a good example to the rest of the restaurant staff.

Personal Attitude

When it comes to the personal attitude, the kitchen steward has to always remember that he is carrying the name of the restaurant. For this reason, he has to show pride in what he is doing. This includes walking with an erect posture as well as making sure to remain respectful and courteous at all times, even to his coworkers.

It cannot be denied that there are kitchen stewards who smoke. For this reason, he has to make sure that he only smokes at the designated area, most especially not around guests.

How a kitchen steward handles himself, especially when it comes to his personal hygiene, also reflects upon the restaurant, so he has to make sure that he is always aware of the fact that he carries with him the name of the restaurant while working and even when he is through with his shift.

Personalize Your Space with Decorative Picture Frames

Personalize Your Space with Decorative Picture Frames
Most people pay little attention to the frame that surrounds a picture, dismissing it as simply a convenient way to hang the piece from a wall. However, frames have been around almost as long as art and, over the years, have become appreciated as something more than the finishing touch that adds dramatic flair to the pictures they enclose.

There is a wide variety of decorative picture frames available, whether you choose to shop for them at the local mall or have a custom frame designed specifically for a particular piece of art. Brightly-colored, ready-made frames can proclaim Its a boy! while providing a spot to show off the newest addition to the family. Others are designed to look like everything from the family car to a favorite pet with slots for the pictures you want to display.

If your budget will allow you to spend a little more on the frame for a particular piece, there are styles that reflect the elegance of bygone eras while others add dramatic flair to the art you want to showcase in your home. It pays to shop around and look at different types of decorative picture frames before you decide which ones are right for you. There are Internet sites where you can download a copy of the art you want to frame, and then see how it looks in a range of styles. This free feature can be especially valuable if youre just starting to decorate or are considering renovations to your home.

Sometimes, homeowners prefer a unified look, adding the same type of frame to the art that decorates every room, while others choose different styles that reflect the taste of individual family members. While it may not seem at first as important as where youre going to place that new sofa, decorative picture frames can add or subtract much from the overall style of a room. When hanging pictures, remember that some pieces are best shown individually, while others are more effectively displayed as a group. When grouping pieces of art together, it isnt always necessary to select the same frame for every picture. While the decorative picture frames dont necessarily have to match each other, however, they should relate to at least some of the furnishings in a room. If your tastes run toward country or more traditional furnishings, it is often advisable to look at wood frames first. If you enjoy modern or eclectic dcor, then the clean lines of metal will probably work best.

Some people enjoy using just frames to decorate their living space. A variety of gilt-edged, ornate frames, interspersed with different colors or textures of contemporary styles, can sometimes create an interesting accent in a room. It can also be an inexpensive decorating choice because unique finds often turn up at flea markets and garage sales.

The history of decorative picture frames can be traced back centuries to the early years of the Christian church. While a type of border or frame appeared around art about 3,000 years ago, the church first used the type of frame we are more familiar with to define religious art. The heavy, jeweled-encrusted frames sometimes were as elaborate as the colorful images they enclosed.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal

Popcorn Ceiling Removal
The acoustic ceiling removal trend started in the early 80s and has become a necessity in many areas when selling your home. Often, if they are not removed before placing your home on the market, potential buyers will request concessions for their replacement. With the average cost approaching $1.50 per sq. ft. and in some cases reaching $2.50 a sq. ft., it is easy to see this can be an expensive upgrade.

Many people simply hate the look of the cottage-cheese-like texture and wonder why they were applied in the first place. As with most construction trends you can follow the money trail for the answer; the widespread adoption of this finish practice by builders throughout America was simple economics. It was far less labor intensive and therefore cheaper to cover a partially finished drywall ceiling with a rough texture than to complete the drywall taping work to the stage needed for a smooth finish.

What started the removal trend? Some say it was the asbestos scare while others claim it was simply changing tastes of buyers. If your home does contain asbestos you must inform the potential buyers through disclosure or face possible legal action later down the road.

Prior to asbestos being outlawed in 1978, the natural but cancer causing fiber was added to the acoustic mix primarily as a binder to help hold the material together. Additionally the chrysotile asbestos used in popcorn ceilings is an outstanding fire proofing agent plus it increases the life of the pump used to apply the material by acting as a lubricant of sort.

But not all acoustic ceilings contain asbestos, and only lab testing can confirm its presence. You cannot smell it, taste it, or see it without a microscope and the training to know what you are looking for. Although acoustic was reformulated in 1978 existing stocks of the material were used well into the 1980s.

By the late 90s the use of this popcorn-looking texture fell out of favor with most builders because of public perception. It does, however, continue to this day with some builders, primarily those of lower end housing. Mobile homes are a great example of the cost saving building practice as most new units still contain machine applied asbestos-free acoustic.

The removal process is straight forward and fairly simple, although some practice is required to master it. Many that attempt to take on the job as a do-it-yourself project without taking the time to learn the techniques needed for success will damage the drywall when scraping off the acoustic, resulting in even more work and expense than removing the material the right way the first time.

After removal of the acoustic ceiling, the drywall must be properly finished as this step was most likely skipped by the builder. This includes coating the nail or screw heads used to hold the drywall in place and application of the final coats of joint compound to the drywall joints, followed by a final sanding. The level of finishing needed depends upon what is desired of the final finish.

A sprayed on knock-down, or hand applied skip-trowel texture will not require the level of perfection that is needed for a smooth or texture-less finish.

If you are looking for a way to increase the value of your home, or you are just tired of looking at those spider web collecting, dust mite gathering, ugly popcorn ceilings, consider removing those eye sores and giving your home a fresh new look. This is a money making project you can do yourself with a little research and a lot of hard work.

Prepare for Hyper-Inflation and Economic Collapse

Prepare for Hyper-Inflation and Economic Collapse
Regardless of what the Obama administration's spin machine might try to make us believe; the American economy is not improving, and it's likely to get much worse before it gets better... If it gets better at all. Right now, we have more fiat (valueless) currency in circulation than ever before, and the current administration seems to think that the way out of a recession is to spend your way out. Printing more money, and handing out stimulus packages is not a plan to bolster the economy, it's a recipe for hyper-inflation.

Economists have been warning us about this disaster for years, and their warnings have gone largely unheeded. In the meantime, our monetary base has nearly doubled, our national debt is at $13 TRILLION and climbing, and the jobless rate hovers at nearly 15 million, and nothing much is happening to significantly reduce it.

You don't have to look very far, (or very far back) to see what happens when a country's monetary base is devalued to the point of hyper-inflation. The currency turns into wallpaper, and the grocery store shelves get empty. That's when the looting and riots begin. We all saw what happened in Greece when their economy crashed, and when it happens here, in the perennial "land of plenty", it'll make the Athens riots look like a day at Disneyland.

But I didn't write this article to be a harbinger of doom and gloom. I wrote this article to share a simple tip that everyone should know to help weather this economic free-fall, and make sure that you and your family are well prepared for the difficult days to come.

There are several important steps that should be taken to prepare, but one of the most vital things to do to get ready for the coming depression is to start storing food.

If stock-piling food sounds like some paranoid, crack-pot idea to you, think of it as an investment. A personal food-bank that you can draw on whenever you need a little extra. You've probably noticed how much food prices have gone up in just the last year alone, and they're certain to keep going up. It's just a smart idea to store up now before costs get much higher.

Learn how to can and preserve meats, fruits and vegetables at home. It's easy, cheap, and the foods you can at home will be of higher quality and nutritional value than commercially canned foods. Most of our grandparents, or great-grandparents used to can foods and keep a supply of preserved and dry foods in the pantry, or basement. Not because they were kooks, or because it was fashionable, but because they lived through the last depression, and they knew that just because there may be plenty now, that doesn't mean it's always going to be that way.

Buy dried and dehydrated foods like rice, potato flakes, dried beans, peas, flour, etc. They have a shelf-life approaching forever, and if you have a membership at one of the wholesale clubs like BJ's, or Costco, you can buy these items in bulk real cheap.

It doesn't have to be a financial burden, either. Don't try to stock-pile a year's supply of food all at once. That would put a strain on anyone's budget. This should be a process that you do in stages. Start off by just buying a little extra durable staple items each time you do your shopping. If you usually buy 2 boxes of spaghetti, buy 4. Or if you usually get 3 cans of tuna, buy 6. Eventually, you'll have an extra week's worth of food, then a month, then 3 months, etc. Just keep at it.

Even if the economy doesn't go into a terminal tail-spin, keeping a 6-12 month food bank in rotation will give you one less thing to worry about should you get laid off, or suffer some other unforeseen financial crisis.

Retro Home and Bedroom FurnishingsA Look at the 70's and 80's

Every twenty to thirty years, it seems that fashion tends to come full circle, with trends simply being recycled and updated. It could just be the vicious circle of history repeating itself, but it seems that even home design is doing the same thing. If you take a gander at the home furnishing offerings today, you'll find that many of the decorations and designs are "retro"', imitating the wave of the late 1970's through the 1980's. In case you weren't around for the original styles, or have chosen to block out most of than span of time from your memory, let's take a trip back and look at the blast from the past that is piled on store shelves today.

Tie-Dyed Clothes. Remember when bright, tie-dyed colors were all the rave? In the early eighties, everything was a starburst of six and seven different colors that didn't really match and could make your eyes water with the brightness of the design. Home furnishings have begun to incorporate this design again, with wall hangings of tie-dyed starbursts, throw rugs in the pattern, bedspreads full of tie-dyed spots, and even some couches artfully designed in such a manner. If you like the bright, anything goes style, this may be for you!

Psychedelic. Okay, so in the sixties and seventies, there were reasons for glow in the dark, psychedelic paint and black lights, though these excuses were usually less than savory and not entirely legal. Today, though, the bright T-shirts and posters have returned, with many individuals covering walls with glow in the dark designs and even painting whole walls in psychedelic paint, installing black lights in their recreation rooms or game rooms for entertainment purposes. This retro design option, coupled with disco lights that are more reminiscent of the late seventies, can really take you back to "the day"', especially if you put in the right music!

Lava Lamps, Most lamps are made to assist with lighting a room and giving you something to read by. On the other hand, in retro times, the lava lamp was more about putting on a show when it was dark in the room. Lava lamps have begun to grace the shelves of not only specialty and gag gift stores but also typical home decor departments in other stores, including superstores and department stores. Add to this the fact that the "lightning ball"' has also made a comeback from its loss of popularity in the mid-80s, and you've just jumped back in time.

Shag Carpets and Bean Bags. Rather than sitting on real furniture, designers are now suggesting a return to the basics. In the seventies, everyone had thick, shag carpeting, and now it's become popular again (as opposed to Berber, the thinnest possible carpet around), only this time it's not in mixed blue and green colors (thank goodness!). And, with the modification of the original bean bag chair that was so popular in the 80s to seat more than one comfortably on plush material or even leather rather than sticky vinyl, you can have your whole home outfitted retro style!

Review Of The Tri-Star Vacuum Cleaner From Wooster Ohio

Review Of The Tri-Star Vacuum Cleaner From Wooster Ohio
The Tri-Star is a very well made vacuum cleaner with several great features. But its not perfect. Here is what you need to know.

The Tri-Star is American made and has been since 1937. In our retail store in Wooster Ohio, we see Tri-Star vacuum cleaners come in for service, and customers ask questions about the Tri-Star.

Here are the points, good and bad.

The Tri-Star is about the most durable machine you can buy. The older models have a magnesium-aluminum casing. The newer models use a resin casing that is as durable as a bowling ball.

The older models of Tri-Star have a 7 Amp motor. These motors are large, powerful, and are all metal. We have seen Tri-Star over 30 years old that are running perfectly. Metal motors last a long time. The newest models of Tri-Star have a 12 Amp motor. This is also an all metal motor, but is actually smaller than the older motors. When I asked the company, they said it was to make the machine lighter weight. The machines are actually lighter weight than the older models (by about 5 pounds). But the bigger motors stay cooler longer. My educated guess is that they will last longer.

The big claim to fame with the Tri-Star is that they have a process called "Cyclonic Action" that forces the air to pass over the dirt in the bag. This is really true, and the pag can be 90% full and still have 100% air flow. The Tri-Star has a canvas internal bag and it uses paper liners inside the canvas bag. Some people just use the canvas bag and do not use the liners. Although the machine will still run properly with out the paper liner, the liners make dumping out te dirt a much more sanitary operation. The liners also help keep the canvas bag free of odors that will stay even after you dump out the bag....if you use the canvas bag alone.

The Tri-Star has a HEPA filter on its exhaust that also includes a washable foam filter and a charcoal after filter. There is virtually no dust re-entering the room after it passes into the bag and filters.

The attachments have air vents built into them that allows full airflow at the tools. This is missing in almost every other vacuum cleaner sold. At our store, we will even drill holes in tools to allow freer airflow at the tool. If you cut off the sirat the tool, it cannot carry the dirt to the bag not carry the air back into the room. Air flow is important.

The only two negatives I could find were the cost and availability of service. The Tri-Star retails for more than $2,000. Although it should last you for several decades, the price may prevent you from owning one of these excellent machines. An alternative is to buy a factory rebuilt Tri-Star. You can usually save half the cost, ad you are just about getting the same vacuum cleaner.

Make sure you buy from an authorized dealer. These are usually distributors that come to your home. But I wouldnt buy one online. I have in the past, and these machines are usually abused.

I hope this helps.

Angelika Kirchschlager and Miah Persson as Hansel and Gretel in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Hansel and Gretel

Let me start this review by pointing out that my usual territory is Broadway.  But when The Metropolitan Opera asked me to come for a tour of the theatre and to review Hansel and Gretel I just couldnt say no.  Hansel and Gretel is traditionally done by operas at Christmas time.  Im not so certain that The Mets production falls into the same vein.  The ballet has The Nutcracker, Radio City Music Hall has The Rockettes and its Christmas Spectacular, Broadway has White Christmas or A Christmas Carol.  The production at the Met has none of the magic, the beauty or even the stage-craft of any of the aforementioned productions.  This current production originated at Welsh National Opera and was subsequently seen in Chicago and San Francisco before being reworked for the Met.

Based on the tale by German brothers with the ironic last name of Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, Hansel and Gretel has a lilting and beautiful score by Engelbert Humperdinck and a libretto by his sister Adelheid Wette.  Under the baton of Fabio Luisi the orchestra produces a lush and full sound without any amplification.  The vocals were artfully handled by Angelika Kirchschlager and Miah Persson as Hansel and Gretel, respectively.  Unfortunately, they could not be understood.  Were it not for the small screen in the back of the seat in front of me showing sub-titles, I would not have understood a large portion of what was being sung.

There were a number of children there the evening I attended and for the most part they seemed attentive and enamored of the fact that the witch was being played by a man, Philip Langridge acting very silly.  Unfortunately this last fact, while a delightful romp at points is really a one-trick pony.   The set is stark, at points industrial and utilizes a number of drops.  One of them is a large mouth with teeth and a tongue amidst swirls of red.  This doesnt feel very holiday-like yet.

Costume and scenic designer John Macfarlane has used a theatrical design akin to shadow-boxes wherein he sets a large part of the show in sets that are boxes surrounded by a false proscenium.  This pulls the focus center, not a bad idea in theory, its just that for the left and right third of the house, you couldnt see any of the action happening half-way up the stage and beyond.  I cant say it helped the unamplified voices any either.  In all honesty, this really is only a major problem in the second act which takes place on a narrow deep forest set.

Hansel and Gretel are banished by their mother into the forest to search for strawberries after Hansel has caused his mother to spill the milk for that evenings rice pudding.  They fall asleep in the forest when the sand man, played here by Jennifer Johnson comes and puts sand in their eyes to set them to slumber.  They then dream of seeing fourteen angels, only here its a fantasy food scene with twelve bulbous headed chefs who enter up-center (I think, I couldnt see) with platters of food.  While part of the story revolves around the familys inability to give them enough to eat, this food theme falls flat.  How much more fantastical would it have been to have created a ballet with the fourteen angels.  OK, I know, my Broadway roots are showing.

Philip Langridge as the Witch in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Hansel and Gretel

In the transition from the forest to the kitchen of the Witch a drop comes in creating an in one scene while scenery shifts upstage (incredibly loudly).  The drop is an open mouth into which slides a large tongue with a layer cake on it.  The children partake of the tasty delight.  Eventually the tongue with the cake disappears and the drop flies out to reveal an industrial kitchen replete with a KitchenAid mixer and food processor and a large oven where the Witch bakes children into ginger-bread cookies.  Around the set are children who have been turned into ginger-bread cookies.    Wait, what happened to the gingerbread house?  It says in the synopsis in the Playbill that they see the gingerbread house.  Alright, I can see kids wanting to go into a gingerbread house, but this is just cinderblock walls on a drab gray industrial kitchen.

My problem isn't really with the piece itself so much as it is this adaptation.  I think that director J. Knighten Smit has done an admirable job but he was obviously addled by an odd, constricting set and a really odd concept of this classic opera.

The production plays at The Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center through December 30th.  Get Tickets
